Unlocking the power of your breath to enhance your wellbeing
It is often taken for granted that we ‘just breathe’. But some people – for a variety of reasons – are not able to take a comfortable effortless breath.
Your breathing affects everything – from your autonomic nervous system function and stress levels, to your blood pressure and heart rate, posture and core strength, sleep, movement, energy and overall health.
Breathing is also one of the few elements of the autonomic nervous system (the system responsible for our fight/flight and rest/repair functions) that we can actually take control of.
It’s one of the fastest and most effective ways to self-regulate and shape the state of your nervous system – maintaining clarity and balance in both body and mind.
Learning how to work with your breath is an invaluable way to harness greater physical and mental comfort, clarity, focus and ease in your daily life.
Because with a bit of practice, every breath doesn’t have to feel like a struggle.
Who is this for?
Trauma, stress, injury, illness (including long Covid), surgery, postural habits, and respiratory diseases and disorders such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can all negatively affect your breathing, making it difficult to take a comfortable, easy breath.
This can place significant stress on both your body and mind.
In turn, poor breathing patterns can contribute to a variety of issues, including chronic fatigue, pain (especially muscular pain due to overwork of the secondary muscles of breathing around the neck and shoulders, and low back pain as a result of restricted diaphragm movement), anxiety, cardiovascular problems, immune system disorders, jaw problems, pelvic health problems, brain fog, digestive issues, sleep disordered breathing and high blood pressure.
Breath training can help you to re-establish the healthy, functional breathing patterns you were born with and may have lost along the way. Or if you were born struggling to breathe, it can help you to claim your basic right to take a comfortable breath.
You can expect:
In breath coaching sessions we’ll work together to understand what difficulties you are experiencing and identify where you would benefit from changes to your breathing.
This includes a thorough assessment of your posture and current breathing patterns to pinpoint key issues and problem areas. From there I’ll create a personalised programme designed to improve or enhance not only your breathing but also your focus, resilience, performance and overall health.
During our sessions, we use functional breathing exercises and specialist resistance techniques to address restrictions and restore healthy diaphragmatic breathing patterns.
We’ll also explore physical exercises and troubleshooting techniques that can support your breathing. This may include hands-on integrated myofascial therapy – a slow style of bodywork that can help to address muscular tightness or holding patterns that may be contributing to your breathing problems.
The aim is not just to help you take one comfortable breath, but to set you up for a lifetime of effortless breathing.
